Understand what the fold changes
A trifold uses both sides of a sheet divided into three panels, giving six panels in total. That sounds like ample space, but each panel is much narrower than a full-size page. Long names, wide photographs, and paragraphs can become difficult to fit. The reading order depends on the fold direction and which panel forms the cover. Do not assume that six ordinary document pages will print in the correct positions automatically. Choose a trifold because the physical format suits the material, not because a template promises more panels without explaining how they are arranged.
Make a paper dummy before designing
Take an unprinted sheet of the intended size and fold it the way you expect the finished program to open. Mark the cover, back, inside panels, and opening direction. Unfold it and use that marked sheet as a reference when reviewing the layout. Some folded designs use slightly different panel widths so one section nests neatly inside another; ask the printer for its exact template and specifications. Do not rely on a generic equal-thirds diagram if the shop has supplied a different layout. The physical dummy makes confusing front-and-back relationships easier to see.
Assign one job to each panel
A possible plan is a cover with the name and portrait, a panel of service information, an inside sequence, a short life story, a reading or memory, and a back-panel acknowledgment. This is a content-planning example, not an imposition diagram. Keep the ceremony order together where possible so guests do not have to unfold and refold the sheet repeatedly. A lengthy obituary may need substantial editing or a different format. Never cut meaningful family information merely because an arbitrary decorative box is too small; reconsider the layout or move the longer text to another document.
Check both sides at actual size
Print a duplex proof using the exact paper orientation and flip setting the production device requires. Fold it by hand and follow the program as a guest would. Confirm that the cover is right-side up, the interior appears in the intended order, and no text falls into an uncomfortable fold area. Check the back panel too; it is easy to overlook a rotated acknowledgment or a cropped line. Printer settings and templates vary, so the physical proof is more reliable than a verbal assumption about whether to flip on the long or short edge.
Know when a simpler output is more useful
